Northeast Regional Basketball Highlights: Jacksonville and Oxford Face Tough Losses
In a thrilling day of Northeast Regional basketball at Pete Mathews Coliseum, Jacksonville’s girls fought back valiantly but ultimately fell short against Springville in a tight 54-51 finish. Despite a slow start, Neveah Nicholson’s late-game heroics, including a shot to tie that rimmed out with just 0.8 seconds remaining, highlighted the intense matchup. Jayci Taylor led the Golden Eagles with 19 points and 11 rebounds, while Springville’s Georgia Chancellor clinched the game with her timely 3-pointer in the final minute and finished with 17 points.
Meanwhile, in the CLASS 6A semifinals, Fort Payne triumphed over Oxford, securing a 58-35 victory, thanks to Naomi Wise’s dominant performance, which included 20 points and seven rebounds. This win allowed Fort Payne to advance to the championship game against Mountain Brook. Despite overcoming significant injury challenges throughout their season, the Oxford Yellow Jackets, led by Takayvia Boyd’s 14 points and 10 rebounds, ended their season with a respectable 18-11 record.
The excitement of regional matchups continues as teams vie for a coveted spot in the state semifinals, with championship games scheduled later this week.
